We took a drive down to Devil’s Punchbowl and Paradise Valley to check out the ice. Not much going on at the Punchbowl but the warm weather and running water at Paradise Valley produced some nice edge ice. It was a little tricky getting across the stream because there has been quite a bit of water running this winter. I did find out from a friend that what I have been calling Paradise Valley does have a more specific name. It’s called Tripp Falls Ravine. More photos from Trip Falls Ravine can be found on my website.

The very cold weather we have seen the past few weeks is ideal for creating ice and frost. On an earlier visit to Paradise Valley and Devil’s Punchbowl I noticed that the small stream had overflowed and created a large amount of ice. This along with the cold weather created some ideal conditions to form frost feathers. Indeed the ice on the stream was covered with them. I took my macro lens along on the second visit and spent a couple of hours photographing them.

On my visits to Devil’s punchbowl and Paradise Valley I like to photograph ice patterns. As it turns out this has not been the best year to do so but I managed to capture a few patterns on recent visits.

After visiting Devil’s Punchbowl I drove over to Paradise Valley to check on the ice. It also had some large ice formations. There appeared to be an larger than normal water flow in the small stream. More photos from Paradise Valley can be found on my website.

The streams flowing through Devil’s Punchbowl has more water than normal flowing. The result has been a lot of ice and fall leaves encased in the ice. More photos from Devil’s Punchbowl can be found on my website.

The ice was melting last week when we stopped at Paradise Valley to see if there were any photos. The only place we found some nice ice was along a small waterfall.

I generally like to photograph leaves embedded in ice during the winter but just haven’t had many opportunities. On a visit to Paradise Valley I found a few of them in what remained of the ice wall.

On our return from Devil’s Punchbowl we stopped at Paradise Valley to check on the ice along a small stream that flows through the Valley.

One of the things I like to photograph in the winter is ice. Unfortunately this winter has not provided much of an opportunity because it has been so warm. These shots were taken at Devil’s Punchbowl and Paradise Valley near Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Paradise Valley is located a short distance from Devils Punchbowl so I usually stop and check it out as well. I typically find some interesting ice photos as ice forms along the small stream that flows through the valley but the cold weather has frozen the stream and a fresh snowfall had covered any ice formations. The ice wall that forms along the stream was impressive.
