I have a few Red-bellied Woodpeckers that show up at my feeders year around. Their favorite food seems to be peanut butter suet.
After a morning of cross country skiing we decided to drive over to Ashland, Wisconsin to take in the annual Northwoods Harness Club’s Sleigh & Cutter Rally. I’ve had it on my bucket list for a while so we decided to take the opportunity to get it done. The Rally is held at the beautiful Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center just outside Ashland. It was a cold day but we managed to get a few photos.
More photos from the Sleigh and Cutter Rally can be found on my website.
From Two Harbors we drove up to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. I had expected to see more ice because there were some nice ice storms in November but the ice was mostly gone.

Our next stop on our North Shore venture was Gooseberry Falls State Park. The cold weather had created a lot of ice and all of the waterfalls were covered in ice. Strong winds the day before had covered up any tracks around the falls and conditions were pristine on a beautiful sunny day. Once again we were dissapointed at the lack of ice along the shore.

After a brief stop at Stoney Point we continued our drive up the North Shore for a brief stop in Two Harbors. We always drive out to the Harbor area to check things out. The sea fog was also hanging around Two Harbors.
The Presque Isle was at the docks loading iron ore pellets. This would be one of the last ships in the harbor until the 2017 shipping season starts in March.
Before leaving I took a shot of the lighthouse.
When we woke up it was bitterly cold out and Lake Superior was covered in sea fog. This is a phenomenon that occurs when the water is warm and the air is very cold. There have been some spectacular photos of the Duluth Harbor area with walls of sea fog out in the lake. We decided it was too cold out to go cross country skiing so we decided to drive up the North Shore and check out ice conditions. Our first stop was Stoney Point where I captured a few photos of the sea fog out in the Lake.
