My wife has put together an exhibit of eight of my winter photographs for the Menomonie, Wisconsin Public Library. The photos selected are shown below.

A Female Northern Cardinal taken during snowstorm.

A Bald Eagle shot at Colvill Park in Red Wing Minnesota. It was fourteen below zero.

These trees covered in ice were photographed above Lake Superior at Tettegouche State Park in Minnesota. A strong March storm roared across Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Nor’easter caused huge waves along the lake which then froze on the trees.

Bridge along the Red Cedar Trail near Downsville, Wisconsin after an early November snowfall.

An Ice formation at Devil’s Punchbowl near Menomonie, Wisconsin

Bond falls is my favorite winter waterfall destination. It is located near Paulding, Michigan in the U.P.

Trees photographed, during a winter snowstorm, while skiing the Backcountry Trail at Swedetown. Swedetown is located in Calumet, Michigan.

A rock and Ice formation along the Apostile Islands.

I normally submit photos to the Great Lakes Photo contest run by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This year the title of the calendar has been changed to Wisconsin’s Great Waters Calendar and reflects photos from the Mississippi River. For the first time all three of my submissions were included in this year’s calendar.

Apostle Islands Sea Cave

This is a part of the Apostle Islands sea caves located near Cornucopia, Wisconsin. Linda and I and Linda’s two sisters booked a trip out to the sea caves with Good Earth Outfitters of Cornucopia. We had visited the caves many times during the winter when they are known as the Apostle Islands Ice Caves but we had never visited them in the summer. This was one of the first shots I took on the trip.

Trempealeau Mountain

Perrot State Park is one of our favorite spring and fall destinations. On this fall trip we hit it just right when the fall colors were at their peak. Trempealeau Mountain sits in the backwaters of the Mississippi River near Trempealeau, Wisconsin. This view is from Brady’s Bluff Trail.

Northern Pacific Ore Dock Number 1

This is a decommissioned ore dock that can be seen in Superior, Wisconsin. This was taken late one fall afternoon when the late afternoon light was directly on the ore docks.

This is a big winter weekend with two of my favorite events taking place. Just down the road in Hudson, Wisconsin is the Hudson Hot Air Affair. They typically have a large number of hot air balloons at the event. More photos of the Hudson events can be found on my website.

While in Hudson you can also visit the Trumpeter Swans on the Saint Croix River.

Another option is to drive over to Willow River State Park and cross country ski or walk down to Willow Falls.

Up north is the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race. This is always a fun family event. In my opinion it is one of the better sled dog races for spectators because all of the races are out and back so you can watch the entire event from one location. We usually watch the start of the race then head off for some lunch and then return to watch the racers return. More photos from the Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race can be found on my website.

In the afternoon we drive down the Meyers Beach and walk out to the Apostle Islands Ice Caves. It doesn’t look like you will be able to walk out to the caves on the ice this year but there is a hiking trail above the ice caves that provides some nice views. More photos from the Ice Caves can be found on my website.

Linda put together a show of eight of my photos at the Menomonie Public Library. She did all of the printing, matting and framing of the photos. I just took the pictures. They will be on display through the month of April.

My wife and I are frequent visitors to the Apostle Islands Ice Caves and have always wanted to tour the caves in the summer. Until recently we thought the only way to do so was via kayaks. Never having been in a kayak we have been a little apprehensive about such a venture.

A few weeks ago we were in Cornucopia, Wisconsin to visit friends. We stopped at the harbor to kill a little time and for me to take a few photographs. While I was photographing the harbor my wife visited some of the shops. She came back with a brochure for Good Earth Outfitters. It Turns out they provide boat tours of the sea caves. We decided to give them a try after our friends recommended them.

We made an early day of it. It was cloudy and it looked like it might not be a good day to be out in the lake. After lunch we drove over to Cornucopia to catch the boat. By the time we arrived it was a beautiful day.

Tim was our tour guide and did a great job. He pointed out that we were really lucky because it was a beautiful day. Many of the trips this summer have been in rough weather. It has been a windy summer.

We were taken out to the end of the sea caves and then moved in close to shore so we could get a closer look at them. In a number of cases we backed into the caves. I was surprised that motor boats could visit the caves but they are permitted. Tour operators must have park permits. It was a beautiful trip and I would highly recommend it particularly for those who are not able to kayak.

After our tour of the sea caves we walked over to Halvorson Fisheries to pick up a load of Whitefish.

One of the problems with winter is the vast array of photographic opportunities. February is especially busy time of the year. More things to photograph results in a large number of photographs. In going through my photography files I realized I only processed a small number of this years photos from the Apostle Islands Iced caves. Here are a few of my favorite lost photos.

As people walked around through the uplifted ice pieces would break off and get scattered around. Some of them made beautiful subject for photography.

The clear ice at the Apostle Islands in addition to providing some nice ice fractures also provided some really interesting ice patterns. I also spent a considerable time looking for interesting ice patterns.
